The Getting Ahead Program offers educational/vocational support to individuals “stuck” in generational or situational poverty, and is based on Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World , a program created by Philip DeVol, co-author of Bridges Out of Poverty.  It fosters exploration and adaptation skills that are based on the most effective methods toward a self-sustainable life and employment.  Participants must be eligible for TANF but do not need to be receiving TANF to participate and may be a custodial or non-custodial parent.  Individuals may participate in Phillips/Sedgwick, Logan, Morgan, Kit Carson/Cheyenne, Lincoln/ Elbert, Washington and Yuma counties.

This program is offered through Rural Solutions, SSUF, NECALG and partnerships with Washington County Connections, Rural Communities Resource Center, Prairie Family Resource Center, Morgan County Family Center and Eastern Colorado Workforce Centers.

Free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings Offered

Women's Wellness Connection, a program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's and National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP), is offering free breast and cervical cancer screenings, diagnostic and treatment services to uninsured and underinsured women 40 to 64 years of age (who are at or below 250% or the Federal poverty level), at over 130 screening sites around Colorado.  There are locations in Logan, Morgan, Washington and Yuma Counties.

Breast and cervical cancers claim the lives of more than 40,000 women each year in the U.S., but early detection through breast and cervical cancer screening saves lives.  Deaths from these diseases occur disproportionately among women who are uninsured or underinsured and often lack access to screeenings and other diagnostic services.

When you're in the know, you're in control.  No matter what you find in your routine breast and cervical cancer screenings, it's important you find out.  You may find relief in knowing that you're cancer free, or you may find comfort in knowing that there's hope and help for your journey.  Either way, these screenings might just save your life.  This is a program that is there from beginning to end, so if you do find something, we are there to help with additional diagnostics or if you need treatment we are there for that as well.

QPR Gatekeeper Training
A Gatekeeper is anyone trained to recognize a suicide crisis and know how and where to find help. Training is now available in your area through the LifeSource program of Rural Solutions. QPR Gatekeeper Training was created and developed by Paul Quinnett, Ph.D., of Spokane, Washington. Dr. Quinnett began a QPR Instructor Certification Program to allow qualified candidates to teach QPR and increase the number of gatekeepers trained to act in a bold and positive manner to prevent a suicide and save a life. The founders of QPR believe that most people contemplating suicide – whether because of depression or some other significant problem – will turn to a friend, a family member, a parent, a clergyperson, or physical heath professional instead of seeking the help of a mental health professional. Therefore, anyone who is in routine contact with a distressed individual stands the best chance of intervening. That is why LifeSource encourages everyone to learn these skills. The information presented in the training is easy to understand and reinforced by a QPR booklet and card complete with warning signs, methods to encourage a person to get help and a list of resources available in your community. To download a flyer - QPR.
To set up a Gatekeeper Training or if you have any questions, please contact Maranda Miller at 970.526.3616 or maranda.miller@rural-solutions.org, the LifeSource Program Coordinator at Rural Solutions. The training takes only about an hour to complete and is completely free.
